I recently travelled to the coast of British Columbia for an eco experience deep in the heart of the great bear rainforest. The floating grizzly bear lodge accessible only by float plane had been a bucket list item of mine for years, and I was excited to experience these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Only a few minutes after my float plane took off, I realized that this experience would be impactful in more ways than one. Kilometer after kilometer, for as far as the eye could see, was the horrific devastation of deforestation. The old growth forest below was marked with the scars, both fresh and healing, products of the lucrative logging industry in the province. There was not one instance in the 25 minute flight where there was a section of land not effected, so much so I could not take one photo that showed natural forest. The land appeared almost as farmland, with plots cuts out, some bare, the others in various stages of regrowth. The lake shown here bared an eerie resemblance to a heart, it's veins bled dry by industry. I've travelled all over Canada and have flown over many wild places, and have never seen anything like it. The experience left me angry and sad. As one local revealed to me, it's BC's dirty little secret. This was one secret I could not un-see.
