Miss Piggy is a top sight to see in Churchill, Manitoba (after the magnificent polar bears!). This cargo plane crashed on a chilly November morning in 1979 after engine failure. Three crew members were on board and walked away with minor injuries, which was incredibly lucky! We were wondering were the name "Miss Piggy" came from and what we found is that the planes were commonly overloaded (being a little pig-ish!) and once, this plane held a cargo hold full of actual, live pigs! I took this photo on a chilly November afternoon with our polar guide, Tiffany, not far away. When I walked up to the front of the plane wreck, Tiffany was feeling very uneasy about me being close to an area that the polar bears could easily be camouflaged and pop up out of literally nowhere, so she decided to retrieve her shot gun from the truck, as an extra safety measure. If a bear was to show, Tiffany would fire the gun in the air to scare the bear off, out of harms way. Luckily, that didn't happen, but for such huge animals they can hide VERY well. We were lucky enough to visit Churchill during polar bear season and see the magnificent creatures that call the shores of Hudson Bay home for a few weeks every year.
